INDIAN Union Minister of State for Power, K.C. Venugopal provided an update on several governmental initiatives to improve energy efficiency and conservation in the country.

Some the measures taken by the Indian government include the improvement of energy efficiency in commercial buildings, small to medium enterprises and heavy industry. They have also pushed demand side energy management for agricultural industry and municipalities, along with developing a National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency.

The government have also developed a scheme to provide financial assistance to Indian States to strengthen their institutional capacities and capabilities as far as energy efficiency support is concerned. Amongst State actions are Annual Action Plans, which includes creation of database for Energy Managers / Energy Auditors / Designated Consumers, organizing training programs / workshops, awareness campaigns. Demonstration projects on energy efficient street lighting and energy efficiency in the SME cluster and Investment Grade Energy Audits of Government Buildings.

The above scheme was further supplemented by Contribution to State Energy Conservation Fund Scheme, which included preparation of sector specific energy savings plan of the State.
